Taxes


Residents of the Town of Altavista are billed taxes once a year for Real Estate, Personal Property, Mobile Homes and Machinery and Tools and are due on or before December 5th each year.  These taxes are billed based on assessed values.  All assessments for the Town of Altavista are handled by Campbell County Commissioner’s office and are based on ownership of the property as of January 1st of each year.  Personal Property taxes are not prorated. Residents are assessed for an entire year if they have a Town of Altavista situs. Personal property acquired after January 1 is not assessed until the following year. Real Estate Tax and Mobile Home Tax

The tax rate for real estate and mobile homes is $0.1043 per $100 of assessed value.

Personal Property Tax

The nominal tax rate for personal property is $2.00 per $100 of assessed value.  The effective rate is $0.50 based on a 25% assessment ratio.

Machinery and Tools Tax

The nominal tax rate for machinery and tools is $2.00 per $100 of assessed value.  The effective rate is $0.50 based on a 25% assessment ratio.

Meals Tax

The tax rate for meals is 8%. Meals tax is due from the business every month on the 20th. If the business reports early, they will receive a 2% credit. 

Lodging Tax

The tax rate for lodging is 5.5%. Lodging tax is due from the business every month on the 20th. If the business reports early, they will receive a 3% credit. 

Cigarette Stamps Tax

The cigarette stamp tax is 25 cents per stamp.

Exemptions for Elderly or Disabled
If you are 65 years of age or older, you may apply for an exemption of the tax on real property based on annual income and assets. Applications for tax exemption must be filed every year.  Please contact the Campbell County Commissioner’s office at (434) 592-9518 for more details.
 
As a resident of both the Town of Altavista and Campbell County, citizens are subject to both town and county taxes for Personal Property and Real Estate.
Assessments for all taxes are the responsibility of the Campbell County Commissioner of the Revenue. The Commissioner’s office is located in Rustburg in the Haberer Building. Information regarding property ownership, transfer of ownership, correct mailing address, etc. should be kept current with the Commissioner of Revenue. The Altavista Treasurer’s office issues bills and handles collections for Town taxes. Taxes are due on December 5th of each year. Bills are typically mailed by the end of October. Should you not receive a bill, please contact the Treasurer’s Office staff at 369-5001.
